Inconsistent Blogger
Writing something pithy and incisive regarding the law and/or recruitment every week is more of a challenge than I expected!
One particular issue I suffer from is the urge to destroy orthodox paradigms and hypocrisy wherever I find them. What’s the problem with that? I’m pleased you asked, the problem is it weakens the author’s (my) image and can make them (me) appear bitter and jaded. I’m fine with jaded, but I’m certainly not bitter…
Blogging about work is a tricky tightrope to walk. You want to share something of yourself with the reader, however you don’t want to alienate people needlessly. Lawyers can be sensitive souls, particularly Gen Z, and there’s little upside to upsetting potential future clients or candidates by disagreeing or sharing contentious content with them.
Sadly that’s the world we live in now. I have friends I disagree with on multiple issues, occasionally we debate them, it doesn’t undermine the friendship. Most people aren’t like that, they live in echo chambers, if you approach them with a different viewpoint they can become very rattled.
Let’s be realistic, I’m never going to push out, “5 reasons why you should work with me”, or “3 ways to make your CV better”, type content. If you want that you won’t have to search hard, it is the bulk of the market and about as interesting as watching paint dry. I also struggle to create backslapping, attaboy, type content, “4 reasons why you’re an amazing lawyer”. Posts like those get great engagement as people love to like and share reasons why they’re fantastic.
Oh well! Hopefully this helps you understand why I’ve been an inconsistent blogger, I’ll keep trying for all you lurkers out there!
